Today sees the start of Alcohol Awareness Week 2025, and the theme is 'Alcohol and Work'. Last year, the Institute of Alcohol Studies published statistics that alcohol costs the UK economy over £5 billion each year(1). Of this over £1,750 million relates to sick days, and a further £2,206 million due to "presenteeism" - basically showing up at work but being too hungover to be productive. Oh, I remember those days... I remember the days when I was working in finance where I would turn up at work, but chose those tasks where the brainpower needed was minimal. I was guilty of phoning in sick in my time too, but not as often as I'd be at my desk, wishing I wasn't.
Maybe you're in that situation now, overly familiar with that feeling of groggy tiredness. Surviving just being there on zoom calls and in meetings. Clock watching until the end of the day.
It's very possible you're doing OK at work - I know I did. You may be hitting targets and being impressive in meetings, you may even be getting promoted. And if you're managing that while showing up feeling crap on a regular basis; imaging what you could do if you weren't...
So what can you do about this if you are worried? Well, if you're concerned about your drinking and think it could be time to stop, coaching could help, and I'd be happy to have a conversation with you about this, book a call here. You could also benefit from these book and podcast recommendations.
And what about the other side of the coin - what if you're a business owner or manager and you have someone on your team who is talking to you about their alcohol use, it can be difficult to know how to approach the situation. I regularly host a webinar - "It's Not Just Rock Bottom: Understanding the grey areas of alcohol use" which is aimed at managers and coaches who may be supporting people who are privately concerned about their drinking. Details of all upcoming webinars can be found on the events page of this website; or you can follow Your Sober Path on Eventbrite to be notified of all our events going forward.
